Direct messages (DMs) let you send your contacts personal notes through Twitter. Much like routine tweets and @replies, direct messages are restricted to 140 characters. Unlike regular tweets and @replies, the only individual who can see a direct message is the recipient.

You can send out a DM just to a Twitter user who's following you (however you do not need to be following that user), which assists reduce spamming and other undesirable messages. To see whether somebody is following you and to send out a direct message:

1. While logged into your Twitter account, click Messages in the leading menu bar.

The message window opens. From here you can send out a personal message to twitterers who are following you.

2. Click New Message.

3. Enter the username of the individual you wish to send out a message to.

Start typing a Twitter username. A list of possible names will turn up; when you see the name you desire, click it.

4. Enter a message in the first box and click Send out.
