On December 17, 2012, Instagram announced a change to its terms of usage, specifying that "you concur that a service or various other entity may pay us to show your username, similarity, images (along with any type of linked metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or funded material or promotions, without any compensation to you".

There was no apparent option for customers to opt out of the changed terms of usage without deleting their accounts, and also the step gathered severe objection from personal privacy supporters as well as customers. After eventually, Instagram asked forgiveness saying that it would remove the controversial language from its terms of use.
